Lutein and Zeaxanthin

Phytochemistry

Lutein and zeaxanthin are members of the natural carotenoid family. They belong to the xanthophylls class of carotenoids also known as oxycarotenoid.

They are natural fat soluble yellowish pigments, found in algae, phytosynthetic bacteria and in some plants such as ( Pumpkin, Okra, Guava and Mustard). Chicken egg yolks are a rich food source of lutein and zeaxanthin.

Promotion effects on eye health
Lutein and zeaxanthin are mainly accumulated in the macula of the retina, where they bind to the retinal protein tuberlin. Zeaxanthin is specifically concentrated in the macula, especially in the fovea. Lutein is distributed throughtout the retina.

They serve as accessory light gathering pigments and to protect the toxic effects of ultra-violet radiation and oxygen. These two carotenoids filter out harmful blue light and quench free radicals that can damage the macule, the part of the eye responsible for sharp and detailed vision.

With advancing age, concentrations of these precious carotenoids decline, leaving the eyes suspectible to age related disorders. They are thought to play a role in protecting against serious eye problems such as glaucoma age-related macular degeneration and age-related cataract formation.

These two carotenoids are referred to as macular yellow, retinal carotenoids or macular pigments. In fact, lutein and zeaxanthin have been called, "conditionally essential nutrients" because of their critical protective functions. Like many other important health-related compounds, lutein is not manufactured in the body. The only way to obtain it is by cosuming foods rich in this antioxidant or by supplementing with lutein and zeaxanthin.
