IMMUNOPLEX ET®

Alternative to antiretroviral therapy

Improving access to medicines for people living with HIV/AIDS presents a challenge for all countries and an even greater challenge for the developing nations. By the end of 2002, UNAIDS estimated that the total number of people living with HIV/AIDS stood at 42 million including 5 million new infections. In the same year, an estimated 3.1 million people died of the disease. Over 95% of the people infected live in developing countries. The high price of many of the HIV-related medicines offered by common suppliers especially antiretroviral medicines is one of the main barriers of their availability in developing countries. Traditional medicines are being used empirically in many countries for the treatment of AIDS. Evaluation of these treatments in persons infected with HIV is a new challenge, especially since 5-6 million people are estimated to be infected, and all possible resources must be made available for the benefit of the affected populations.
