Alternative to metronidazole
Composition:
Each capsule contains
Brucea javanica (Ya Dan Zi)
defatted seed extract .......... 200 mg.
Pharmacological actions:
Dysenzi can effectively kill Entamoeba histolytica.
The active principles are Yadanziosides A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, N and O.
They are terpenoids and quassinoid glycosides. They can kill Entamoeba
histolytica, both vegetative and cyst forms.
Major indication:
- Amoebiasis
- Chronic diarrhea due to giardiasis
Other indications:
- Skin warts and corns
- Malaria
- Carcinoma of the uterine cervix, rectum, colon, anus, esophagus, liver, breast, lung, skin and thyroid.

Side effects:
No significant side effect in recommended dosage. In some cases nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, sensation in the heaviness in the abdomen and diarrhea due to over-stimulation of gastrointestinal tract.
Contraindication:
- Pregnancy
- Lactating mother
- Children under 2 years
- Chronic gastric ulcer or gastritis
- Advanced liver disease
- Renal insufficiency
Dosage:
- 2 to 5 years - ¼ capsule
- 6 to 11 years - ½ capsule
- 12 years and above - one capsule
In mild case, once a day at bed time for 5 consecutive days is enough. But in severe case, twice daily before meal for 3-5 days is more effective or as directed by physician.
Advantages over metronidazole:
- Same effective in once daily dose.
- No side effect.
- Low cost.
Drug combination:
In case of mixed infection, both amoebic and
bacillary dysenteries, it should also be used together with Diarstat® or antibiotic of western medicine.
