Cholecrush®
BACKGROUND:
Gallstone formation is the most common disorder of the biliary tree and it is unusual
for the gall bladder to be diseased in the absence of gallstone. There are two types of
gallstone; cholesterol stone (80%) and pigment stone (20%); although the majority are
mixed composition. Medical dissolution of gallstones can be achieved by oral administration
of the bile acid ursodeoxycholic acid or herbal medicine which stimulate formation of bile
acid effectively. FAME Pharmaceuticals has developed new herbal medicine known as
Cholecrush® for treatment of cholelithiasis.
Composition:
Each caplet contains
Silybum marianum extract ....................... 160 mg
Eclipta alba extract ................................. 120 mg
Picrorhiza kurroa extract........................... 100 mg
Soy lecithin .............................................. 80 mg
Emblica officinalis powder .......................... 40 mg
Pharmacological Actions:
Summary of pharmacological action of Cholecrush®
• dissolve gallstones
• inhibit cholesterol synthesis in liver
• reduce cholesterol concentration in the bile
• increase production of bile in liver
• more solubility of ingredients in bile
• maintain fluidity of bile
• reduce inflammation in biliary tract
• prevent further formation of gallstones
Silybum marianum (Milk thistle)
Milk thistle contains the active compound known as
silymarin which may help to prevent or treat gallstones via its ability
to increase the solubility of the bile. It also reduces biliary
cholesterol concentration and bile saturation index, thus helping to
dissolve gallstones and eliminate stones that may have formed.
Eclipta alba (False daisy)
It contains a number of active principles such as
wedelolactone, stigmasterol, b-sitosterol, and alkaloid ecliptine. They
enhance liver function in fatty liver and cirrhosis. They also make the
cholesterol more dissolved in the bile to prevent precipitation.
Pichrorhiza kurroa (Christmas rose)
Picroliv, an iridoid glycoside mixture is the active
constituent isolated from Picrorhiza kurroa, Picroliv reduces
cholesterol levels by inhibiting an enzyme, HMG Co-A reductase, which is
involved in the production of cholesterol in the liver. Low level of
cholesterol in the bile may help to dissolve gallstones and prevent
further stones formation.
Soy bean (Soy Lecithin)
It contains polyunsaturated fatty acids such as
Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is a member of the omega-3 family of
fatty acids. They may be useful in preventing or even dissolving stones.
Soy bean also supplys lecithin for normal physiological function of the
bile to prevent stone formation. Inadequate level of lecithin may
precipitate gallstones. Amino acid methionine in soy aids in fat and
cholesterol metabolism. It also strengthens liver and gall bladder
function and may also increase level of another amino acid, taurine
which can improve bile flow and help to dissolve existing stones.
Emblica officinalis (Amla)
The plant supply the highest source of natural
vitamin C. Extra vitamin C is important because it lowers bile
cholesterol levels, decreasing the chance that cholesterol-laden bile
will clump to form gallstones.
Indications:
Biliary disorders such as cholelithiasis (gallstones), cholecystitis and cholangitis. Prophylaxis treatment of recurrence of gallstones.
Side effects:
No serious side effects were observed. Loose stool
may be experienced during the first week of medication due to increased
production of bile and contraction of gall bladder.
Drug interaction: There is no reported cases of interactions with other medicine. Antibiotic may be used in combination with
Cholecrush® in case of cholecystitis and cholangitis.
It is beneficial to take together with Vitamin C, lecithin and Omega-3 fatty acid supplement.
Contraindications:
Cholecrush® should not be used in patient with acute biliary obstruction by gallstones or other causes.Dosage and administration: Adult : one caplet three times daily half an hour before meal.
Children 6-12 years :half caplet three times daily half an hour before meal.
Duration of treatment depends upon type, size, number and duration of gallstone formation.
